The Silo
When I first entered this club,
we had about 6 hours to set up, and what I saw horrified me! The back of
the stage had a curved top, and there was NO backstage area! We had to
think fast and hard!
Lighting
Since the back of the stage was
like an upside-down half-pipe, we had a lot of depth to work with, but
no height! We quickly decided to partition off the back four feet with
our backdrops. This gave us a small area to set up special effects and
hide props. The main room was actually two stories with a wrap-around
balcony. The bulk of our front lighting was hung in front of this
balcony. I limited the back lighting plot to the "mystery"
colors of cobalt blue and true green. These were almost always in
contrast to what was falling on the front of the stage and added optical
depth.
Sound Sound
was a bit easier as there was ample side room for speaker stacks. (see
balloon shot below) There was an acoustic trap in the rear that made it
hard for the drummer. To fix this, a small speaker stack was hidden
behind the backdrop directly behind the drummer. It worked! By
the time we did our sound check, things had fell well into place. In
fact, as years went by, it became one of our favorite venues to
play!
This was especially true when the owner decided to rip down the
half-pipe and put in a full stage !! ;)
